Class of 1967 50th Reunion Message #2

Class of 1967 50th Reunion Message #2

April 11, 2016

Dear Classmates:
Our 50th reunion is ever nearer, and your volunteer reunion committee has had several meetings. The committee includes Dave Church, Wayne Savage, Jim McNeece, Jack Parry, Dick Meade, Steve Phillips, and their wonderful spouses. We're also tapping into the expertise of the USNA Alumni Association and the experiences of recent 50 year class reunions.
We want to give you as much current information as possible. This letter has important additional information so please read in its entirety. We have bold faced and added an * on the Q & A’s with new information.
We'll present it again in a Q&A format.
***************************************************
WILL OUR REUNION BE ON HOMECOMING WEEKEND?
Yes. Here is why: The AAC yearly football schedule is announced in March of each year so we will not know a final schedule until then for the 2017 season. Even after dates are known, exact game times may depend on television coverage and may not be firm until very late. The Air Force and Homecoming game dates are exceptions. They are already locked in for 2017. We looked at these two alternatives and picked the Homecoming weekend scheduled for 21 October 2017 even though our opponent is not known. We rejected the Air Force game on September 30th because the Air Force game is always a sell-out with many USAFA alumni and fans in town, and that game is early enough in the season to potentially be designated as 2/c Parents Weekend. This combination would result in tremendous competition for parking, rooms, restaurants, and USNA facilities, the latter since Midshipmen events are always given priority.
***************************************************
WHAT WILL BE THE LENGTH OF THE REUNION?
Our 50th reunion will begin on Thursday, 19 October 2017 and end on Monday, 23 October 2017. We picked a longer period hoping it will help with air travel costs and provide some flexibility in the schedule. It also allows time for a Sunday night dinner and dance in Dahlgren Hall, an opportunity uniquely offered to 50th year reunions that has proven to be very popular with previous Classes.

*WHEN WILL THE REUNION REGISTRATION BE OPENED?
Your Alumni Association is currently upgrading its entire alumni database software package, to include a very user friendly event registration procedure. As soon as the upgrade is completed we will open registration.
***************************************************
*WHAT WILL BE THE BASE REGISTRATION AND MEMORABILIA FEE?
The committee has decided to make the registration & memorabilia fee $167 per couple. We have kept the memorabilia package small and do have a requirement for working funds for the reunion, and the ensuing four years of Class operations.
***************************************************
*WHERE WILL THE TAILGATE BE HELD ON SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER 2017?
There are only certain areas outside the stadium able to accommodate large tailgates. One near the water tower is reserved for the visiting AAC team. The others are in a far corner of the parking lot about 250 yards from the stadium gates. The outside locations are not convenient, especially if we have inclement weather. There is the additional issue that there is no re-entry until halftime at the stadium.
Given these problems and the fact that this is our 50th Reunion, the committee chose to locate the tailgate inside the stadium and have requested Class Ring Northeast at the north end (large scoreboard) which has its own entrance, is convenient to our stadium reunion section seating and restroom facilities. It will provide long absent Classmates the opportunity to watch the “march on,” to see the tremendous improvements that have been made in the stadium, watch the football game, and to sing “Navy Blue and Gold" with the Brigade while continuing to socialize and enjoy refreshments (adult beverages) throughout the game.
The Committee has negotiated a per-person charge that is just $2 more than was charged at the 45th reunion for the same great menu (yes –there will be Nutty-Buddys) and set-up.
***************************************************
*WILL WE HAVE A HEADQUARTERS HOTEL WHERE WE ALL CAN STAY?
We will have the Westin Hotel on West Circle as our headquarters hotel, as the committee decided the Class needs to have a central gathering point where some reunion activities will be held. We have contracted for a small block, keeping in mind that we are subject to a certain guaranteed occupancy. For the 45th reunion our large block was filled early, but late cancellations resulted in us not meeting our contracted minimum guaranteed occupancy.
The Westin Hotel has ample, inexpensive parking (valet and self) and has the continuously running City of Annapolis connector bus running to City Dock/USNA Gate ONE and the Barry Gate. Academy (Yard) and downtown Annapolis parking is virtually non-existent.
The Westin Hotel is within easy walking distance to the Stadium.
The Westin Hotel has undergone extensive renovation to its meeting/cocktail reception rooms and its air conditioning systems.
***************************************************
*IS THE WESTIN HOTEL TAKING RESERVATIONS YET?
The Westin Hotel 50th Reunion reservations window has NOT been opened yet. We will send a class-wide note when the window opens. Early reservations are recommended as the guaranteed reunion rate may not be available once the block is filled.
***************************************************
*WHAT OTHER HOTELS ARE AVAILABLE?
We are attempting to secure a small courtesy block of rooms at one of the smaller properties near the Truman Parkway Park & Ride lot on Riva Road, where the free NAAA football game stadium shuttle originates/returns.
We have added a link here a list of other local hotels of various price ranges for your use (http://www.visitannapolis.org/hotels/hotels-lodging-by-regions/annapolis-city/). The list should help individuals in their planning and provide information to Companies that may want to make their own block reservations to accommodate smaller groups.
